We looked at John Maedas "The Laws Of Simplicity" Law 5 - Differences
1. Describe the relationship between complexity and simplicity
Complexity would not exist without simplicity and vice versa.
Maeda says that “Without the counterpoint of complexity, we could not recognize
simplicity when we see it.” By this i think he means that if we had 2 examples, one of each we could recognise both the complex and the simple sides of each example.
”We know how to appreciate something better when we can compare it to
something else.”
“Simplicity and complexity need each other.”
Implement this factor into our radio ad.
2. What analogy does Maeda use to demonstrate this relationship?
Tea cup – “Its unexpected complexity made everything already impossibly
simple, become even simpler.”
Maeda talks about the teacup that is very complex as the analogy to demonstrate the relationship between complexity and simplicity.
3. In what context does Maeda discuss rhythm / beat in relation to the fifth law
Contextualise this relationship and discuss how this can be used in relation to the
Student Exhibition - giving specific examples
Like the importance of negative space to keep things simple, there must also be objects that speak for the complexity side of things. To 'counteract' the complexity. There is a certain rhythm that maeda speaks of in relation to the complexity and simplicity relationship.
For Example: When im helping my dad with recent technology. To me it is simple and to him it is complex. When im helping him i find an example of something he already knows to compare it to or demonstrate the easiness of the technology.

4. HOMEWORK: Find visual examples - pieces of design & multimedia work that
demonstrate the relationship between simplicity and complexity – post the results
on your blog, with contextual analysis and reflection

My Favourite 2 photos for comparison are:
This is a Prime example of how different complexity and simplicity are. In my opinion the complex image looks af if the architect was on drugs, everything is all .. splattered?
Where as the stairs are very minimalistic. Sheesh! i understand how maeda feels about simplicity now...
I discovered this powerpoint in class in year 10.
It shows the ways to minimalise the visual elements in a powerpoint to ensure you do not bore the audience:

We Made rough designs in 2D design Yesterday, My designs were utterly ridiculous:
We all liked rachels one so i Used her design ( with her permission) and came up with these:

6 Thinking Hats :
White Hat – The Data Hat
This hat became apparent when we were discussing the groups we needed on the exhibition,
we layed out all of the aspects we needed to cover and then we refined those groups.

Red Hat - The Intuition Hat
When we were discussing the groups, i suggested that we should break them up into more than two. That was just my feelings, everyone else thought otherwise.

Black Hat – The Critical Hat
Again, when we were group planning, I suggested against 2 groups because I thought that it would waste time when we have group discussions.
Yellow Hat – The Positive Hat
I gave positive feedback and received positive feedback when we created Headlines in the 2D class.
Green hat – The Creative Hat
Lots of patterns and commonalities are found on a weekly basis with all our our designs, I think we all have a style and consistent elements in our designs.
Blue Hat – The Practical Hat
When we create the headline we WILL HAVE TO STAY ON TRACK and meet the deadline.

OVER AND OUT
This is really good work - but some essential questions have not been answered.
ReplyDeleteREADING QUIZ: Question 3 - Contextualise this relationship and discuss how this can be used in relation to the Student Exhibition - giving specific examples.
Please address this.
6 Thinking Hats
Contextualize each description to your specific exhibition group task
Please address this - you have given a short description of each hat, but not contextualized. This means you need to give an example from your own experience.
